NEW YORK — Jack Tompkins, the former mayor of Pemberton Township, NJ has officially been replaced following his resignation amid allegations of sexual and mayoral misconduct.

Republican councilman Matthew Bianchini was selected in a 3-2 vote to serve out the remainder of Tompkins’ term, which comes to an end later this year, NJ Advance Media reported. He was officially sworn in as mayor following the vote on Wednesday night.

Tompkins, who for years resisted calls to step down, faced no shortage of accusations during his time in public office. Back in July, he stormed out of a meeting over calls for his resignation, sparked by what Bianchini described at the time as “instances of misconduct,” according NBC News 10.

“During your tenure, you have subjected the residents and employees of our township to repeated and deeply troubling instances of misconduct,” he said in a statement. “These include, but are not limited to: sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, the creation of a toxic work environment, acts of retaliation, and decision-making that has caused—or threatens to cause—irreparable harm to this community,

He ultimately submitted a resignation letter on Dec. 29, after an internal investigation concluded he had violated the township’s anti-harassment, discrimination and retaliation policies.

“Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as Mayor of Pemberton Township, effective December 31, 2025,” Tompkins wrote. “Due to personal circumstances, I am unable to provide adequate notice period. Thank you for your understanding.”

Tompkins, who was elected in 2023, said it has been his “honor” to serve the community of Pemberton.

“I have enjoyed talking to and assisting the many residents and local businesses of the township,” he continued. “While some of my goals have been successful, I am saddened that I could not accomplish all of my goals.”
