NORFOLK, Va. — Early voting for the April 21 referendum on redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterms is set to begin on Friday.

The referendum and other surrounding procedures are the subject of ongoing legal challenges, but the vote on it is being allowed to move forward as planned following rulings — the latest on Wednesday — by the Virginia Supreme Court.

Here are the deadlines voters need to know:

—April 18 at 5 p.m. is the last day to vote early in-person

—April 14 is the last day to register to vote or update your registration, though voters can register and vote with a provisional ballot through Election Day

—April 10 at 5 p.m. is the last day to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you

To register to vote or update an existing registration, go to www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal.

The ballots will present only the following question regarding a proposed constitutional amendment: “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”
