Trump says he'd consider hiring DeSantis next year: 'He's doing a good job'
Published in News & Features
One of Tallahassee’s favorite parlor games has been figuring out what Gov. Ron DeSantis will do next year when he’s no longer Florida’s governor.
The president of the University of Florida? Florida State? A job with the Tampa Bay Rays?
On Monday, DeSantis told Fox’s Sean Hannity that he wouldn’t rule out another presidential run. That would leave him with some time to spare before the 2028 race heats up.
So what to do until then? According to Libby Dean, a News Nation reporter covering the White House, Trump floated the notion that DeSantis could find a job in his administration.
When asked if he’d consider DeSantis, Dean reported, Trump replied, “Don’t know, but I’d certainly consider it. I think he’s good, doing a good job.”
What would that job be? Who knows? It’s been speculated that a Supreme Court justice seat could be available. Or maybe, if Pam Bondi doesn’t last another year, attorney general?
In many ways, Trump’s job offer could be thanks for the special session that’s coming up in April. DeSantis has vowed he will redraw Florida’s congressional districts in such a way that Florida could offer up three to five extra Republican seats — which could help the GOP retain control of the U.S. House.
There’s no doubt the relationship between the two has improved since DeSantis challenged Trump in 2024 and things soured a bit. They’ve recently golfed together at Mar-a-Lago.
If DeSantis were to join the Trump administration, it would be the second time that Trump will have lifted DeSantis to his next gig. The president’s endorsement in 2018 allowed DeSantis to surge past the GOP favorite for governor at the time — then-Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam — and win a razor-thin race against Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum.
