4 arrested at pro-Palestinian protest outside Brooklyn Jewish senior center

NEW YORK — Four demonstrators — including two teens — were arrested Monday night as pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protesters squared off with police outside a Brooklyn Jewish organization holding an event promoting a real estate venture in Israel that the opposition claims is the “illegal sale of Palestinian land.”
Pepper spray was released and cops wrestled with protesters during the clash outside Young Israel Senior Services of Midwood on Ocean Ave. and Avenue L about 6:45 p.m. Monday. Video on social media shows cops tackling one demonstrator onto a pile of recyclables.
Two 17-year-old boys were taken into custody for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct, officials said. A 30-year-old man was arrested for assault, weapon possession and harassment and a 36-year-old man was charged with obstructing government administration and disorderly conduct.
Two of the protesters were given desk appearance tickets and ordered to return to court to face their charges at a later date.
Roughly 300 protesters on either side of the issue showed up waving signs and screaming at the opposition, NYPD officials said. No cops were hurt.
Monday’s Israeli real estate event was similar to one held last week at the Park East Synagogue on the Upper East Side, which also drew protesters.
At one point during that protest, an attempt to move a metal barrier resulted in a police officer’s leg being injured, while another officer was doused with water tossed from a building along the demonstration route.
Past protests at the Park East Synagogue led to legislation to create “security perimeters” around houses of worship during demonstrations.
The Council’s legislation, which requires police to create a public plan on how they will handle protests and authorizes them to place perimeters around houses of worship, became law in late April. However, the plan required by the law isn’t due until the summer.
