Nick Reiner fights to access $1.6 million trust from parents he's accused of murdering

Nick Reiner is still fighting to get access to his family trust from behind bars.

“Nick still has not been able to access even $5 from his trust to buy basic subsistence items from the jail commissary,” Reiner’s attorneys Anita Wu and Geoffrey Neri wrote in court filings, obtained by PEOPLE. They further noted that Reiner’s efforts to collect “money that is lawfully his own” have been repeatedly delayed, which has also left the 33-year-old unable “to re-engage criminal defense counsel.”

The pair of filings were in response to objections from trustee Jodi Pais Montgomery and former trustee Paul Kanin, who have rejected Reiner’s request to access the fund, which is worth roughly $1.6 million. While he is the only beneficiary listed, they said a California state law, dubbed the “slayer statute,” makes him ineligible. It states that a person cannot inherit money or property from people they “feloniously and intentionally” kill, according to California Probate Code Section 250.

“Nick’s sense of urgency is real, but it did not arise in a vacuum,” they said. “It arises from the deaths of his parents, the very settlors of the Trust at issue, and Nick is presently accused of causing those deaths.”

In response, Reiner’s attorneys said: “The ‘slayer statute,’ the sole remaining basis for withholding this money, takes away what a person receives as a result of someone’s death. It does not implicate money that became Nick’s years earlier.”

They went on to claim that trustees did not distribute money owed to Reiner before his parents’ deaths, saying the “Age-30 Distribution” provision written in the trust had not been fulfilled. It required that Reiner be paid a portion of the fund on his 30th birthday — Sept. 14, 2023 — but that still has not happened.

Reiner has been held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility for the murder of his parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner, since December 2025.
