2025 movie highlights: The Seattle Times critic recaps a year in rhyme
Published in Entertainment News
Dear readers, hi! Remember this?
Last year, alas, I was remiss —
My year-end poem took a break
But now it’s back, with rhymes to make!
It’s been my custom, at year’s close
To cast aside unmetered prose
And try to write, without a curse,
A year of movies, told in verse.
First off, let’s say there’ll surely be
An Oscar nod for Leo D.
(I’m leaving out his movie’s name —
It doesn’t fit this poem’s frame!)
Some things of which I’m now a fan:
That flying dog in “Superman”;
Those “Wicked” broom rides, capes a-flying;
“Hamnet” — sigh — which left me crying;
The popcorn zoom of “F1’s” races;
“Wake Up Dead Man” — oh, those faces;
That fateful “Blue Moon” New York night;
And how “Train Dreams” found magic light.
I’d raise a glass, in any pub
To join the “Thursday Murder Club.”
“Paddington” came back, with joy;
B. Jones was “Mad About the Boy.”
“Thunderbolts” starred Florence Pugh,
Jackman crooned in “Song Sung Blue,”
Scarlett J. went all “Jurassic,”
“Sinners” was an instant classic.
If you think remakes can’t be fun,
Watch Neeson in “The Naked Gun.”
Or feast your eyes, as wide as mine,
At this year’s gorgeous “Frankenstein.”
“Avatar” returned, in blue.
Also back: the “Downton” crew.
“Snow White’s” dwarves were mostly creepy;
Lohan/Curtis still got freaky.
Some titles made producers rich,
Like “Minecraft” and “Lilo & Stitch.”
“Zootopia” gave kiddie fun,
And Ethan Hunt had one last run.
As for next year, don’t look away:
Hi, Spider-Man and “Brand New Day”!
Among the rest, I crave not leastly
Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly.
Now, with the old year nearly through,
I hope some films transported you.
With warmest cheer, my rhyming ends:
Happy, healthy new year, friends!
