Jack Schlossberg shares Caroline Kennedy's reaction to 'Love Story' portrayal

NEW YORK — Caroline Kennedy’s son Jack Schlossberg said the two laughed “so hard” at her portrayal on FX’s hit show “Love Story,” about the tragic romance between her brother John F. Kennedy Jr. and wife Carolyn Bessette.
The New York congressional candidate, 33, scoffed when asked by Katie Couric, during Wednesday’s episode of her “Next Question” podcast, whether he’d watched Connor Hines’ limited series — which starred Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon as the late couple. The famed pair died in 1999, along with Bessette’s sister Lauren, while the trio flew to Martha’s Vineyard.
“No,” said Schlossberg, who also said his mother had not watched, before backing up and interrupting Couric’s next question. “Actually, I showed her a clip of her (played in the show by Grace Gummer). And we were laughing so hard.”
Though he couldn’t recall the particular scene, Schlossberg — who previously decried the show as “capital F for fiction” — said it featured the on-screen Caroline “freaking out.”
“And we were laughing so hard as if that’s how my mom acts. So, you know, people keep in mind, it might be entertaining, but it’s fiction,” said Schlossberg, then recalling a clip of his dad Edwin Schlossberg, played by Ben Shenkman. “Oh and my dad! They had my dad dressed up in some plaid outfit. My dad’s the most stylish guy I’ve ever met. So, it’s funny, I mean … no issue.”
Schlossberg agreed with Couric that the “stupid show” offered an unflattering portrayal of his parents, who he dubbed: “The two most dignified, private people in the whole world, who do nothing but help others.”
“Who cares?” he added.
Schlossberg also clarified that he has “no problem with anyone who liked the show or watched it” and he understood why people want to emulate JFK Jr., who was “so cool.”
But he was not a fan of the effort “to fictionalize and sensationalize his romantic life without giving any credence to the serious things that he did,” such as having done “a lot to try and advance the causes of progress in his time.”
Said Schlossberg: “My family, you know, we’re not just celebrities. We’re not just icons. These are public servants. ... Not royalty.”
