BALTIMORE — Rock guitarist and activist Tom Morello has announced the Power to the People Festival, a one-day event celebrating music, activism and community action, taking place Oct. 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia.

The festival will feature performances by Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, Jack Black, Brittany Howard, Dropkick Murphys, Cypress Hill, Killer Mike, the Linda Lindas and a special appearance by Bruce Springsteen. Morello announced the event Wednesday night while performing with Springsteen at Nationals Park in Washington.

Presale tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m., with general ticket sales beginning Saturday at 10 a.m.

Curated by Morello, the festival is being billed as a nonpartisan gathering focused on peace, justice, equality and civic engagement. In addition to performances on two stages, organizers said the event will include a “Freedom Village” featuring nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups and community partners offering opportunities for volunteerism, education and grassroots organizing.

“The Power To The People festival is about freedom, justice, equality and rock and roll,” Morello said in a statement. “It’s about the power everyday human beings have when they come together through music, art, community and action.”

Other artists scheduled to appear include Serj Tankian, Grandson, Taylor Momsen, Matt Cameron and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels. Legendary artist Shepard Fairey will also participate with artwork and a DJ set.

Organizers said a portion of ticket proceeds, along with all net proceeds from VIP ticket sales, will benefit VoteRiders and HeadCount, organizations focused on voter access and registration.

Morello, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame guitarist best known for his work with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, has long combined music with activism. He previously organized the 2011 L.A. Rising concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which featured Rage Against the Machine, Muse and Ms. Lauryn Hill.
