Catherine, Princess of Wales completed Three Peaks Challenge in 'atrocious' weather conditions
Published in Entertainment News
Catherine, Princess of Wales overcame terrible weather conditions to complete the Three Peaks Challenge last month.
The 44-year-old royal climbed Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon - the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales respectively - within 24 hours recently to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and explained how she and other climbers continued "stoically" in awful weather to achieve the feat.
Catherine - who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in 2024 before confirming that she was in remission the following year - told former British tennis star Tim Henman and All England Club chair Deborah Jevans on the Overheard at Wimbledon podcast: "Part of the journey was trying to enjoy the process, the training beforehand, but also making time... during the walk to meet people and enjoy the journey, rather than just quickly getting to the top.
"The weather was atrocious. Everybody got soaked through, but it was a very sort of stoically British thing to do. You're soaking wet and everyone's going: 'Come on, we can do it."
Catherine - who serves as All England Club patron - explained that the fact that the challenge was for a "good cause" kept her going.
She said: "I've just been so blown away by all the donations and all things. Everyone's been so generous. That's what keeps you going, it's when you know you're doing it for a good cause. Keeps you going through the hard times."
Catherine - who was supported along the route by Mountain Rescue - was greeted by husband, William, Prince of Wales, 44, their children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight, as well as her parents Carole Middleton, 71, and Michael Middleton, 77, and her brother James Middleton, 39, at the base of Mount Snowdon after completing the challenge.
It followed a 23-mile trek, 3,064m of ascent, and a 462-mile journey between peaks driven by her aides.
A photo of Catherine - who, with William, became joint patrons of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in January 2025 - smiling at the summit of Ben Nevis was posted on the Prince and Princess of Wales' Instagram account.
In a message, the princess penned: "Every year, hundreds of thousands of people in this country hear the words no one wants to hear. What follows is a path that tests every part of who we are: physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.
"The challenges ripple outwards, touching families, friendships, work and the quiet moments we spend alone with our thoughts.
"Cancer doesn't just affect the body. It changes how you think and feel and profoundly affects every aspect of life. I know this personally, and that the journey through and beyond treatment requires more than medicine alone.
"I have taken on the National Three Peaks Challenge, not simply as a physical endeavour but as a chance to explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back."
