Charlie Hunnam has admitted the idea for his new Sons of Anarchy TV show came to him in "several dreams".

The 46-year-old actor will be playing himself in Legends - a meta-thriller series about the cast of the motorcycle drama, in which he played Jax Teller.

He will be reuniting with co-stars Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi in the series, and told The Hollywood Reporter about the inspiration for the show.

Charlie said: "[It was] really born out of me having several dreams over a period of time about us all being back together.

"Obviously something in my subconscious was yearning for that experience -- to have another creative process with that group of people that I loved. So I wrote something that would allow that to happen."

A description of Legends reads: "When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show."

However, Charlie went on to stress that Legends is "definitely not season 8 of Sons of Anarchy".

He added: "It's the same group of actors, but we are all playing ourselves, going on a mad adventure, and coming together after 10 years apart, although maintaining deep friendship in that time."

Despite Charlie's admission about the show premise coming to him in dreams, his castmates have previously spoken about the concept, with Rossi telling Entertainment Weekly that it's been an idea that's been floating around "for years".

But it wasn't until he heard the idea from Charlie that Rossi - who played Juice in Sons of Anarchy - that he realised it was "just so crazy it might work".

He said: ""I've read a lot scripts, and he's [Charlie] done something very different, very smart.

"Charlie's such a great writer, and he has so much passion for how he wanted to do this. It's like Galaxy Quest meets Curb Your Enthusiasm; it's this heightened, crazy world."
