Paramore singer Hayley Williams honored her ex-husband, New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert, who died Sunday. He was 45.

Williams began her Instagram message by stating she’s not sure if it’s appropriate to memorialize the rocker she was married to for about a year, but decided to do so anyway.

“Chad is indeed a legend in the scene and my time connected to him taught me a lot,” she began.

The pair were married for about a year before splitting in 2017.

Gilbert’s third wife, Lisa Cimorelli, announced his death with a message from his family.

“He left this world surrounded by friends and family and took his final breaths with his wife and mother by his side, just as he wished,” reads the joint statement she posted.

Gilbert returned to the stage in June after undergoing emergency surgery to removed a brain tumor months earlier. He’d battled cancer for about five years.

Williams thanked Gilbert for the time they had together.

“He introduced me to people that continue to shape my life in beautiful ways, and to music and culture than has made life a lot richer,” she wrote on Wednesday.

Williams said there wasn’t much she could say about Gilbert that members of the punk music community didn’t already say after he died. Blink-182 singer Mark Hoppus called him the “best friend to every person he met.”

Williams also celebrated Gilbert as a connector.

“His passion for fostering the community was inspirational and sticks with me,” she added.

Williams sent her condolences to Gilbert’s family and friends. She’s scheduled to perform a Wednesday night solo show in Cincinnati.
