John Cena's wife Shay Shariatzadeh supported him through his terrifying stunts scenes in Matchbox the Movie.

The wrestler-turned-actor performed his own stunts in Matchbox the Movie, the new action film, and John has revealed that Shay was by his side the whole way.

John, 49 - who stars in the film alongside Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, and Teyonah Parris - told E! News: "There were some days I gotta kind of give the Mrs. a danger grade on the days, and she knew the worst thing for me was going to be jumping off that building. And I love her for the fact that she was there.

"She could easily have gone into the fear vacuum with me of, 'Oh my god'. No, she was totally supportive of like, 'You got this.'"

John - who married Shay in 2020 - remembers his wife coming over to him after the scene and giving him "a great hug" and telling him "how proud of [him] she was".

The Hollywood star also had to confront some of his own fears in order to shoot the stunts. However, director Sam Hargrave promised the former wrestler that he would be "safe".

John shared: "I was still very scared in doing all that stuff. I didn't overcome my fear, but I promised Sam I would lean into the uncomfortable and he promised me I would be safe and we both delivered on our promise."

John previously revealed that he intends to be "physically active" for as long as possible.

The movie star has pushed himself to his physical limits throughout his life, and John doesn't have any intention of slowing down anytime soon.

He told People: "When I was a young 12-year-old, it was to look muscular so I couldn't get beat up. And then as a late teen, it was to be strong so I could play sports. And then as a young 20-something, I wanted to aesthetically look good just to keep myself disciplined."

John now has different reasons for working out. However, he intends to remain active "into [his] late 80s or 90s".

He said: "At 47 now, my goal is to be physically active until I can't. I put a number in my head of like, I'd like to be physically active into my late 80s or 90s. To do a parallel squat in my late 80s."
