Oscar nominated actors Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve co-star in the new film from Romanian auteur Christian Mungiu, “Fjord,” which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and opens in theaters this week. It’s not Mungiu’s first Palme — his devastating abortion drama “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” won the prize in 2007, and it’s also not the first time Stan and Reinsve have co-starred in a film. In “Fjord,” they portray a Romanian-Norwegian couple who find themselves embroiled in accusations of child abuse in their new home in a small town in Norway.

It’s a thorny ethical exercise of a film in which Mungiu doesn’t offer any easy answers, and it proves that Stan and Reinsve aren’t shying away from challenging fare as their stars rise — their resumes prove that they’re always making interesting choices. If you’d like to check out more of their work, here’s where to stream the best of Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve — so far.

The pair co-starred in the 2024 indie drama “A Different Man,” directed by Aaron Schimberg. A lonely actor with a facial disfigurement (Stan) undergoes a risky procedure to improve his appearance, but finds that even with traditional good looks, he still can’t find contentment. He even shrinks in the limelight of another man with a similar condition (Adam Pearson). Reinsve co-stars as his neighbor. It’s a fascinating film that demonstrated Stan’s desire to move into more complex roles in independent films as he was phasing out of his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rent or buy “A Different Man” on iTunes or Prime Video.

2024 proved to be a banner year for Stan, as he earned an Oscar nomination for his performance as Donald Trump in Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice,” a biopic about the early days of Trump and his relationship with mentor Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). The film had difficulty finding distribution, but it’s a terrific examination of Trump and Cohn’s codependent psychopathic psychology, and Stan is absolutely transformed, and terrific in the role. Stream it on Prime Video, Tubi, and the Roku Channel.

Norwegian actress Reinsve burst onto the scene with Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World,” as the noncommittal Julie navigating life, love and finding her purpose. The film is an instant classic, capping off Trier’s Oslo Trilogy, and earned an Oscar nomination, but their follow-up, 2025’s “Sentimental Value,” won the Oscar for Best International Feature and earned Reinsve her own Best Actress nomination. Stream “The Worst Person in the World” on Tubi or Kanopy, and “Sentimental Value” on Hulu or Kanopy.

“Fjord” would also make for a fascinating double feature with Reinsve’s 2024 film “Armand,” directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel. Reinsve plays a movie star summoned to her son’s school for a tense meeting about an incident between him and another student. She faces off with the other student’s mother, played by Ellen Dorrit Petersen, who also plays an antagonist to Reinsve’s character in “Fjord.” Both films navigate choppy moral and ethical waters about parenting responsibilities. Stream “Armand” on Hulu or Kanopy.

For a few other underrated gems, check out Stan in the Greek romantic drama “Monday” (2021), about a tempestuous relationship (streaming on Kanopy), and in the dating horror thriller “Fresh” (2022), opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones (streaming on Hulu). Spot Reinsve in a small part in Trier’s “Oslo, August 31st” (2011), starring Anders Danielsen Lie (streaming on Mubi), and in Thea Hvistendahl’s horror thriller “Handling the Undead” (2024), streaming on Kanopy. And don’t miss Mungiu’s masterpiece “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” available to rent on iTunes and Amazon.
