DETROIT — The new "Friday" movie has a director, and he's from Detroit.

Lawrence Lamont, who made his feature film debut with 2025's L.A. comedy "One of Them Days," will helm the upcoming "Last Friday," the latest entry in the Ice Cube buddy comedy franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lamont, 37, grew up on Detroit's East side, and after learning about film at Southfield High School he got his start making music videos for Detroit rappers like Earlly Mac and Big Sean.

"One of Them Days" was a hit in theaters when it was released in early 2025 — it grossed more than $50 million off of a reported $14 million budget — and led to Lamont nabbing the "Last Friday" gig.

The original "Friday," starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker, was released in 1995. It became a cult hit and spawned two sequels, 2000's "Next Friday" and 2002's "Friday After Next," along with a short-lived animated series.

No timeline has been announced for the new film, but The Hollywood Reporter says "Last Friday" will shoot in Southern California, and the production has received $11.4 million from the state's production incentive program.

Lamont told The Detroit News in 2025 he wants to uplift people with his films.

"At the end of the day, with all my work, I just want people to leave theaters and feel inspired," he said. "I want to make sure that people feel a sense of hope with everything I do. I want to make sure everything has heart in it, and ends hopeful."
