White House airs new pro-Trump ad funded by taxpayers

The White House is using public funds to air a new ad that urges support for President Donald Trump’s right-wing agenda and is virtually identical to one that he used in his 2024 presidential campaign.

With the midterm congressional elections looming in just five weeks, the Trump administration has spent more than $300,000 and counting in taxpayer dollars to pay for the 30-second black-and-white spot that depicts the president grimly striding down a hallway as he calls for a “final battle” against “globalists” and the “fake news media.”

“With you at my side, we will demolish the ‘deep state.’ We will expel the warmongers from our government,” Trump says in the ad. “We will drive out the globalists. We will cast out the communists, Marxists and fascists.”

“We will throw off the sick political class that hates our country. We will rout the fake news media,” he adds. “And we will liberate America from these villains once and for all.”

The ad ends with Trump staring straight into the camera lens as a message appears saying: “Paid for by the U.S. Government.” That’s the only difference from the 2024 ad, which urged instead viewers to “Join President Trump’s Fight for America.”

It’s the third overtly pro-Trump ad that the White House has aired using taxpayer money in recent days. One fawned over Trump’s July 4 visit to Mount Rushmore and another hailed supposed Trump achievements like the “largest tax cuts in history,” “reigniting American manufacturing.”

Officials defended the ads as a “reminder to Americans to love their country.”

“The announcements are very clearly not campaign ads,” the White House said in a statement. “President Trump is not on the ballot and there is no call to action,”

The White House compared the ads to previous ones used by past presidents, like one that former George W. Bush’s administration used to promote a Medicare law and a spot aired by the Biden administration to promote life-saving COVID-19 vaccinations.

But critics point out those ads didn’t promote the presidents and didn’t air in the homestretch of a contentious political battle like Republicans are locked in ahead of the midterms.

Spending on the latest ad already topped about $319,000, according to AdImpact, which tracks media spending, and included appearances during pro football games on Sunday.

It’s unclear how much the White House plans to spend on the ads altogether or what pot of federal money is bankrolling the ad blitz.

The latest ad is especially controversial because of its reference to ousting “warmongers.” Trump made ending foreign wars a key plank of his historic 2024 White House comeback win, but has since launched a war against Iran that has disrupted the global economy and sent fuel prices soaring.
