Clay Holmes sharp on mound as Mets complete 4-game sweep of Cardinals

NEW YORK — Offseason acquisition Clay Holmes took the ball for Mets manager Carlos Mendoza’s squad against the Cardinals on Sunday and continued his impressive start to the season as a starting pitcher. The former closer tossed six innings — the first time this season he’s completed six frames — allowing just one run on for hits while striking out six in the Mets' 7-4 victory.

The right-hander lowered his season to 3.16 in his five starts.

Brandon Nimmo has not gotten off to the start he wanted this season. However, Nimmo came through in a big spot for the Mets on Sunday.

After the Cardinals tied the game at 3 in the top of the seventh, the outfielder grounded a two-out RBI single through the infield, giving the Mets a lead they never gave up.

Nimmo is slashing .202/.253/.381 this season as the Mets are still waiting for his bat to arrive in 2025.

The Mets broke the game wide open in the bottom of the eighth. Luisangel Acuna began the inning with a slowly hit double that trickled into left field and was driven in by Tyrone Taylor on another bloop double. Juan Soto later doubled in Taylor and Francisco Lindor to extend their lead to 7-3.

Soto has begun to shake off his slow start in blue and orange. The superstar went 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBIs on Sunday.

Mendoza’s stable was a bit shaky in the series finale. Danny Young allowed two runs in the seventh and Ryne Stanek made fans sweat a bit after allowing a run of his own in the ninth. However, the right-hander left the tying run in the on-deck circle, securing the victory.

The Mets will welcome the Philadelphia Phillies to Citi Field on Monday for their first true test since their opening series. Aaron Nola will take the ball for manager Rob Thomson’s squad against Tylor Megill.
