MILWAUKEE — The Pirates lost, 4-2, to the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on Tuesday night. Logan Henderson threw six strong innings for Milwaukee, while the Pirates didn’t do much offensively beyond two solo home runs.

With the loss, the Pirates are 57-58 and once again below .500.

Manager Don Kelly was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes. It was his league-high sixth ejection of the season and third in the last nine days.

The Pirates’ offense didn’t do much until late. They managed just four hits in six innings against Henderson — though two of those hits, from Jacob Gonzalez and Endy Rodriguez, left the yard.

The Brewers right-hander racked up eight strikeouts, including the final four batters he faced.

The Brewers had more success against Jared Jones. Jones did well to only allow three runs, though he tied a career high by allowing eight hits. He added a walk and struck out four.

Like the Pirates, the Brewers scored their first two runs off of long balls. Jackson Chourio homered in the third, part of a 3-for-4 day, then Andrew Vaughn led off the fourth with a solo shot to center.

Six of the eight hits the Brewers had against Jones came in the third and fourth innings. After Vaughn’s homer, three singles, capped by a Chourio RBI single, brought in Milwaukee’s third run of the game.

Wilber Dotel pitched two innings of relief after Jones departed, allowing a run on three hits and a walk. He struck out three.

Yohan Ramirez and Kirby Yates finished the game with 1-2-3 innings for the Pirates. Yates retired the side on 11 pitches in his Pirates debut.

It was over when …

The Pirates had their best chance against Abner Uribe in the eighth, when Jared Triolo was hit by a pitch and Brandon Lowe hit a one-out single to put runners on the corners. Both Bryan Reynolds and Esmerlyn Valdez struck out looking to end the threat. Uribe celebrated by pretending to fire a bazooka.

Valdez, who went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts, is mired in the first slump of his career. He is 2 for his last 27 (.074), though he has drawn eight walks in the span.

On the mound

After a stellar July, August didn’t start as kindly for Jones. He threw 83 pitches, matching his season high, in four innings.

At the plate

Rodriguez’s homer was his first since returning from the injured list. He last homered on July 3.

The Pirates had five hits, including just one against the Brewers’ bullpen in the final three innings.

The Pirates and Brewers will play the third game of a four-game series on Wednesday at 7:40 p.m. Paul Skenes (9-9, 3.90 ERA) will face Brewers left-hander Kyle Harrison (8-2, 3.01), who struck out 12 Pirates in an April start but hasn’t pitched for the Brewers in a little less than a month.
