MLive Media Group will stop printing its eight Michigan newspapers in December, the publisher said in a story posted on its website Wednesday.

The final printed editions will be delivered Sunday, Dec. 6, MLive Community President John Hiner said in the story.

The eight publications will continue in digital formats, including MLive.com, the MLive app, online newspaper editions, social media and email newsletters, according to the company. They are Ann Arbor News, the Bay City Times, the Flint Journal, the Grand Rapids Press, the Jackson Citizen Patriot, the Kalamazoo Gazette, the Muskegon Chronicle and the Saginaw News.

"This transition is dictated by our readers’ overwhelming adoption of our news in digital formats,” Hiner said in the story.

MLive said more than 99% of its readers access its content digitally. The company also said digital and online news subscribers surpassed print subscribers this year. MLive said it does not publicly release its circulation numbers; however it did note that according to the Nieman Journalism Lab, it has more than 8 million monthly visits to its website.

The company said the shift away from print is not expected to affect MLive’s roughly 100 journalists. There will be one full-time distribution job loss as well as an end to relationships with contracted newspaper distributors. No job reductions are planned at the Ohio facility where the MLive newspapers have been printed since 2020.

New York-based Advance Local owns MLive.com and consolidated its Michigan newspaper titles under the MLive umbrella in 2012. The newspapers date back more than 120 years.
