Television Q&A: Is there more of Kevin Costner's Western on the 'Horizon'?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: Are we ever going to see the additional parts of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon”?

A: For those of you tuning in late, actor-director Costner several years ago announced plans for “Horizon: An American Saga,” four movies about the Old West. The first, “Chapter 1,” premiered in 2024 to mixed reviews (51% positive on Rotten Tomatoes) and lackluster box office, earning barely a third of its reported $100 million budget. Because the first film was not successful, “Chapter 2” never achieved release beyond some film festivals and from what I can find, the third film was only partly completed and the fourth not done at all. Costner, who put a lot of his own money into the films, has said he will complete them, but there’s no guarantee of when — or if he will get financing. You can find the first film on disc and streaming.

Q: I recently saw “Song Sung Blue” and “Wicked: For Good” on Peacock, but now they are streaming on Netflix. I’ve never seen movies bounce to another streamer before. How can that happen?

A: Every month you can see lists online of movies and TV shows leaving a streamer and lists of new arrivals. While some productions are made specifically for this or that streamer, many are licensed, usually for a set period, and they may move elsewhere after the period ends. Universal, the distributor behind the movies you mentioned, has a multi-venue deal, the Hollywood Reporter said. It includes the movies landing on Peacock (a corporate sibling of Universal) for four months, then a move to Netflix for 10 months, then back to Peacock. The Hollywood Reporter said such deals are “highly lucrative” for studios.

Q: Back in 2022 I saw a Lifetime movie called “Buried in Barstow” starring Angie Harmon. I expected a sequel since it ended with a real cliffhanger. Any word on when we might see a second movie?

A: Fans have been dropping notes in my inbox for four years about when there will be more about the former killer-for-hire played by Harmon, best known for “Rizzoli & Isles.” And it appears fans’ wishes are finally getting granted. In a social media post a few months back, Harmon said she will be making two “Barstow” movies this summer.

Q: My husband and I enjoy watching “Only Murders in the Building” with Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, and all the guest stars. We have finished Season 5, and I thought Season 6 was in the works. But with the tragic death of Martin Short’s daughter Katherine, I am wondering if and when the series will return.

A: The death of Short’s daughter in February was the latest in a series of losses in his life, but he has once again found his way back to work. (I remember years ago interviewing another actor who had gone back to TV not long after the death of his wife. “Work is good therapy,” he said.) “Only Murders” is at work on a sixth season, to be set in London, which should air later this year.
