Matt Damon has adopted a more intentional approach to life since entering his 50s.

The 55-year-old actor has an appreciation for the value of time and is even more determined to make the most of every moment he has.

Matt told the new issue of PEOPLE magazine: "You get on the other side of 50, and at least for me, I really started feeling like time is the most precious commodity there is.

"I just want to be intentional with what I do with it and make sure that I'm spending it exactly where I want to spend it."

The Odyssey star has "three things" that are priorities to him - his "family and work and then Water.org", Matt's nonprofit organisation that enables those living in poverty to access water and sanitation.

Matt and his wife, film producer Luciana Barroso, 49, are parents to daughters Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15, and with the couple's eldest daughters having left home, the pair are enjoying the time left with Gia and Stella at home as they approach the empty nest stage of life.

The Oscar winner said: "Having two older kids who are out of the nest and knowing how fast these final years go, we're trying to be mindful of holding onto what we can."

Matt and fellow actor Ben Affleck, 53, have a production company called Artists Equity, and the former is even more determined to grow the firm "and make the kind of movies that we started the company so that we could make".

Since his milestone 50th birthday on October 8, 2020, Matt has thought about doing things that matter most to him.

The Interstellar alum explained: "I feel like I've calmed down a little bit and I'm not chasing something. I just want to do work that I think is really stellar on my own terms and on things that I really believe in."

As well as becoming more intentional with his life since entering his 50s, Matt's understanding of control has developed with age.

The Good Will Hunting cast member said: "I just try to think about what I can control and what I can't. Instead of railing against the gods about things that I can't control."

He added: "You live long enough and things happen and tragedy comes and visits you no matter who you are. And you have to just accept what happens.

"I think starting out as an actor, you have to feel that way a little bit. You have to because the odds are so long against you."
