Gadgets: A great portable battery

Published in Science & Technology News

When you have a battery that can do small tasks such as charging your smartphone, filling your pool floats and jump-starting your car, you have a winner. That's why you can’t beat the GOOLOO 6000A portable battery.

It’s easy to call this the ultimate portable battery to keep in every vehicle. Beyond providing emergency assistance, its power and versatility make it an invaluable tool to have on hand wherever you go. Whether you're on the road, at work or heading to the beach, it’s ready when you need it most.

It is powered by a 24,000 mAh internal battery that holds its charge on standby for up to 24 months. Use the included jumper cable clamps to jump-start a battery in all gas vehicles and up to a 12-liter diesel engine, according to GOOLOO. Fortunately, I didn’t have a dead battery to test it, but they state it can bring a dead battery to 100% in 1.4 hours and can have a vehicle running with as little as 7 minutes of charging.

Included attachments work with the 160 PSI tire inflator. Connect the nozzle to the tire, turn on the battery and select the inflation rate on the 3.2-inch digital display. The display also shows real-time battery levels. There is a triangular red SOS light, a strobe light, and a 400-lumen flashlight, which would be great for nighttime roadside assistance.

On the side are USB-A (18 watts) and USB-C (30 watts) ports for charging devices from the high-capacity power bank via USB. The flashlight and 12-volt jump-start power are right under them and easy to access. The LED display is on the front with the power button and controls to set the different functions.

The easy-to-use 6000A has 10 built-in safety features, including protection against overcharging and short-circuiting, and works in temperatures up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and down to minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit. There’s an auto-off feature to ensure tire inflation won’t over-inflate.

And just in time for summer fun, all your pool blow-ups can be inflated in a matter of minutes, poolside or on the beach.

H2O Audio has recently launched the TRI RUN open-ear, bone-conduction Bluetooth headphones, designed for runners, cyclists and any fitness enthusiast. They are part of the TRI Series lineup and feature a durable design for tough, wet conditions, with an IPX8 waterproof rating.

In the past few years, bone-conductive headphones have become more mainstream. They are designed with an open-ear design and sit outside your ears. They transmit sound through vibrations in your skull bones, directly into your inner ear. Unlike over-ear headphones and earbuds, which rely on your eardrums to hear sound, this technology bypasses them altogether, transmitting sound through the bones in your face.

The advantage of the open-ear design is that it allows you to hear your content through the headphones while also letting you hear environmental sounds, like traffic.

This might sound crazy if it’s new to you, but what you won’t find crazy is how great these are. As mentioned, each ear has a speaker, which sits outside your ear, and what you hear from the TRI RUN is nothing but great sound. H2O Audio designed the TRI RUNs to set a new standard for open-ear performance with enhanced bass and crisp detail. And they achieved just that.

Since they're designed for endurance activities, they feature a soft, flexible frame with an ergonomic and secure fit that rests comfortably around the back of your neck. Bone conduction speakers are positioned on each end of the frame, delivering audio while providing a secure, comfortable fit for extended wear.

The battery life is rated for 6 hours of playtime before a proprietary 4-pin magnetic USB wireless charge. The TRI RUNs are app-free to operate. Physical buttons on the headset are easy to access for controlling on/off, selections, pairing, answering calls and volume.

Although they are IPX8 waterproof-rated, they are not for swimmers, as Bluetooth does not provide a reliable signal underwater.

If you're like many and need to charge multiple devices on any given day, Aulumu’s M10 Multi Charging Dual Mag 10000mAh Power Bank is a must-have. With a dual-magnetic system, it can charge smartphones, earbuds and Apple Watch devices simultaneously via MagSafe wireless charging, USB-C power delivery, and a built-in Apple Watch charging pad.

The all-in-one portable has a lightweight, durable footprint, weighing just 8.74 ounces and featuring a premium silver-gray aluminum construction. While charging the smartphone, an Apple Watch can be charged on the charging pad, or connect a USB device to the built-in USB-C cable, which has a 35W USB-C PD output.

There’s also an advanced thermal management system built in, which ensures a safe and cool charge. Heat is dissipated through the sides of the battery during charging to keep it cool and extend the M10's lifespan.

Aulumu rates the pocket-sized power bank with a 10,000 mAh battery capacity, a rated output capacity of 5,300 mAh at 5V/3A, and an energy conversion efficiency of at least 53%. A power indicator shows how much power remains in the battery before it needs a USB-C charge.
