NORFOLK, Va. — The Associated Press on Thursday officially called Virginia’s 1st District for Democratic Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor. Taylor unseated Republican incumbent Rep. Rob Wittman, who had held the seat since 2009.
Taylor led the race and appeared poised to win Tuesday evening, but the race was too close to call. Latest unofficial numbers show she had won with 51% of the vote to Wittman’s 48.7%, with 98% of the vote in, according to the AP.
Every locality in the 1st District shifted left, according to analysis from the Virginia Public Access Project. In James City County, Taylor won with 55.3% of the vote. That’s a 14-point shift from 2022, when Wittman won the county by 3.3 points. And though Wittman narrowly won York County with 50% of the vote there, he’d previously won the county by 15.3 points in 2022.
Taylor won in Henrico, her home county, by 25.4 points, compared to 7.5 points in 2022.
The AP also called Virginia’s 5th District for incumbent Republican Rep. John McGuire, who received 50.2% of the vote. That leaves Democrats with seats in eight out of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts.
